Signs of Hidden Water Leaks in Your Home

Warning signs of leaks behind walls, ceilings and floors, and what to do when you spot them.

Ceiling water stains in a green room from a roof leak

Leaks inside walls and ceilings can run for a long time before they're obvious. Catching them early keeps a small repair from becoming a big one.

Signs to watch for

  • Yellow or brown stains on ceilings or walls
  • Bubbling or peeling paint
  • Soft, swollen or sagging drywall
  • Musty smells, especially in closets or near bathrooms
  • Warped or soft flooring around toilets, tubs and appliances
  • A water bill that rises for no reason
  • The sound of running water when everything is off

A quick check you can do

Turn off every faucet and water-using appliance, then look at your water meter. If it's still moving, water is going somewhere.

What to do next

Shut off the nearest valve if you can find the source, take photos, and get it inspected. Related: water leak detection & repair · ceiling leak repair

FAQ

Can a small leak cause big damage?

Yes. A slow leak can soak framing, flooring and drywall and lead to mold before it's visible.

Is a ceiling stain always a roof leak?

No. On lower floors it's usually plumbing from above, and only top-floor stains point to the roof.
